Say Goodbye to “Black Friday” and Welcome the New Trend of “Green Friday”

Since the 1970s and 1980s, the frenzied shopping day known as “Black Friday” originated in New York City and quickly spread across the United States, now reaching (penetrating) more than 50 countries worldwide. In 2009, Chinese businesses launched their own localized version, “Double 11” or “Singles’ Day.” Under the lure of “deep discounts” and “limited-time offers,” people chase the illusion of short-lived “happiness” through shopping, and “Black Friday” has almost become synonymous with extreme consumerism.

Yet, behind all the noise and excitement lies a heavy price: overconsumption, wasted resources, environmental damage, unsustainable production models, and the psychological anxiety and stress that come with them.

This year, why not try something different? Let’s rethink what “happiness” really means and experiment with a new trend: “Green Friday”, a meaningful, sustainable, and thoughtful holiday. It invites us to shift our focus from what’s in our shopping carts to the quality of our lives, and to once again pay attention to what truly matters: family, health, and balance between people and nature. “Green Friday” encourages us to slow down, be present, be mindful, and spend quality time with the people we love, turning the noisy, chaotic “Black Friday” into a warm, purposeful “Green Friday” that’s worth remembering.

Outsmarting the Psychology of Buying

Once we understand the psychological motives behind shopping and the marketing tactics businesses use, it actually isn’t that hard to make wiser choices.

Businesses often leverage dopamine hits, novelty, and “fear of missing out” (FOMO) as psychological triggers to drive impulse purchases. When we can identify these “mental triggers,” we are better able to hit the “pause button”, stop, reflect, and resist unnecessary spending, so we can develop more rational, thoughtful, and values-driven consumption habits.

The Hidden Costs of Black Friday

That discounted item that looks like such a bargain may carry a price that’s hard for both you and the planet to bear:

  • Environmental Costs: Mass production and skyrocketing shipping volumes lead to significant energy consumption and resource depletion. Single-use packaging, mailers, and foam materials contribute heavily to plastic pollution. Returned items are often destroyed or sent to landfills directly, and the rapid turnover of electronics generates massive amounts of e-waste. Behind these seemingly “cheap” goods lies a burden the Earth can hardly sustain.

  • Social and Cultural Costs: “Black Friday” has gradually eroded the time that could be spent on family togetherness and gratitude, replacing the warmth of holidays with a shopping frenzy. Materialism is reinforced, the deeper meaning of life is worn away, and people slowly forget what truly matters amid the endless “buy, buy, buy.”

  • Psychological and Health Costs: “Limited-time, limited-quantity” promotions create a sense of urgency that weakens rational judgment and traps people in a vicious cycle of “shopping to relieve stress.” The dopamine rush from buying is short-lived and illusory, while anxiety, emptiness, and the bills are all too real. Long-term overindulgence in discounts and rush-buying can even evolve into shopping addiction, harming both mental and physical health.

  • Economic and social Consequences: Impulse buys often lead to “buyer’s remorse,” damaging your finances, derailing budgets, and creating a cycle of “the more you buy, the poorer you get.” At the same time, online scams, phishing emails, and data leaks surge during “Black Friday,” turning what should be a “discount season” into a high-risk period. Over time, our numbness toward waste, pollution, and social injustice becomes the most harmful hidden cost of all.

Why Green Friday Is the New Black Friday

"Green Friday“ offers a refreshing alternative to the chaos of Black Friday, encouraging intentional and rational choices and a more sustainable, meaningful way of living. This is an opportunity to slow down, return to what truly matters, give back to our communities, and align our actions with our values. By embracing Green Friday, you can:

  • Rediscover Balance: Pause the hectic pace and reflect on what truly matters. Spend high-quality time with family and friends, and bring warmth and meaning back to the holiday. Shift your focus from “owning more” to “cherishing what you already have” to gain a deeper, longer-lasting sense of happiness.

  • Give back and support your community: Volunteer your time or contribute to local initiatives to make a meaningful difference. Build real connections in your community and remind yourself what holidays are truly about.

  • Resist Overconsumption: Stay away from impulsive, unplanned spending and let your money go toward what’s genuinely important. Choose products that are high-quality, durable, and repairable; resist limited-time offers and reduce waste. Support local businesses so that money circulates within the community, creating a positive cycle.

  • Contribute to the planet: Support projects that give back to nature, such as tree planting, ecological restoration, or zero-waste initiatives, so that your spending helps create a positive feedback loop. Help children and young people develop values centered on sustainability.

  • Declutter Your Closet: Sort through unused items to donate or regift. Bonus: you might even rediscover your floor and find some inner ease.

  • Volunteer or Donate: Dedicate this day to causes you care about, such as environmental groups, community kitchens, animal shelters, and more. Or simply donate a bit of your time to help a neighbor shovel snow or visit elderly friends or relatives. In giving, you’re also nourishing your own heart.

  • Adopt-a-Drain: Through this fun and eco-friendly action, regularly clean the storm drains on your street to prevent trash from entering rivers and lakes. With a simple bloom, children can see how small actions protect the Earth and learn responsibility.

  • Enjoy the Simple Family Time: Turn off your phone and return to being present. Watch a family-friendly movie, (or check out some Inspiring Documentaries about our planet, curated by ZIRAN), read together, play board games, or plan an outing with loved ones (ie, a treasure-filled, free museum, or a whimsical Gingerbread Wonderland experience). The most precious thing isn’t the discount, but the time you spend together.

  • Create Memorable Family Traditions: Cook a family recipe together, upcycle old items into a new creation, or repair something together. Start Meal Planning as a family, or start a small “green family project.”

  • Opt Outside, Step into Nature and Reconnect: Go for a hike, go camping, or explore a nearby greenway or state park. Mother Nature never goes on sale, but her gifts are always priceless. Let water and land, sunlight and leaves, heal the fatigue of everyday life.

  • Unlock a new skill, learn together, and grow: Try a new hobby or eco-friendly life skill, such as starting organics recycling or composting, learn to mend clothes, make natural cleaning products, or explore zero-waste recipes. You can also sit down with your family to set “green living goals” and begin with small changes.

  • Start a Family Tree or Storytelling Project: Interview older relatives, organize old family photos, and capture your family’s stories. Through telling and listening, you keep memories alive and help children understand the meaning of their “roots.”

Celebrate “Green Friday” with love for nature and meaningful action, and let this day be a renewal of the heart.

  • Gift Experiences, Not things: Instead of objects, give the gift of memories or experiences with memberships, classes (such as traditional dance, instrument, cooking, sewing, etc.), tickets to performances or games, or travel plans. Experiences create joy that lasts far longer than any gadget.

  • Gift Knowledge: Books, audiobooks, or even pre-loved books are heart-warming, eco-friendly choices that inspire and educate.

  • Shop Local: Delight your loved ones with unique, locally crafted items, fresh and healthy foods (like jams, honey, or dumplings), and other regional specialties. Enjoy something delicious and sustainable while supporting small businesses in your community.

  • Gift Handmade Items: Add a personal touch by creating a one-of-a-kind gift—upcycle old jeans into a hat or tote, or repurpose mason jars into magical night lights or charming desk planters. Not the crafty or green-thumb type? No problem! Support local artisans who’ve already done the hard work, offering beautifully handcrafted items with a story that makes your gift truly special.

By focusing on these thoughtful alternatives, you can make your holiday gift choices more conscious, impactful, and sustainable.

  1. Plan Ahead:

    • Make a list of what you truly need and stick to it.

    • Set a budget and don’t budge—your future self will thank you.

    • Inventory what you have.

  2. Pause and Reflect:

    • Ask yourself, “Do I really need this?” or “Will I regret this tomorrow?”

    • Explore alternatives like borrowing, repairing, or reusing.

    • Create a purchase order chain of command: free, used then new.

  3. Avoid Triggers:

    • Unsubscribe from sales emails and limit time on social media to avoid FOMO.

    • Block retail websites if you’re feeling tempted.

  4. Embrace Mindfulness:

    • Wait 24 hours before making any purchase to ensure it’s necessary.

    • Focus on quality over quantity—buy less, choose better.

    • Think about Disposal: Before buying, consider how you’ll dispose of the item when it’s no longer needed.

Green Friday: a Step toward a Better Future

Green Friday isn’t just an alternative to Black Friday; it’s an opportunity to redefine how we celebrate the holidays. Through this more intentional lifestyle, you’ll help protect the Earth and promote a more sustainable business culture.

This is the moment to align your actions with your values: centering people, reflection, and care, for yourself, your loved ones, and the planet we share.

🌎This year, let’s choose purpose over chaos. Say goodbye to the frenzy of Black Friday and embrace the calm and strength of Green Friday, a holiday that is truly worth celebrating and one that leaves a lasting, positive impact.
